Hello!Hello! I’m Jack Grimes. I’m a graphic designer, digital artist and web developer. I live in Pittsburgh with my partner and our cat, Fish.our cat, Fish. I like reading, tinkering with computers, cooking, and collecting new-age CDs.new-age CDs. Art by Eva Sakmar-Sullivan, 2004

→ I’ve been freelancing since I was a teenagerteenager Vince Kaichan album cover, 2015 and building websites since I was in college. In 2022 I graduated from Appalachian State UniversityAppalachian State University with a BFA in graphic design. While I was there, I managed the art department print shop, and when the print shop became the Synergy Lab (a new space offering student access to stuff like 3D printers and laser cutting) I helped manage that too. I also developed a full brand identitya full brand identity for it. My undergraduate thesis, Neurosynthesis Archive,Neurosynthesis Archive, is a work of design fiction; a collection of forged artifacts from a different past.

In 2018 I joined the admin team at the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute,Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute, cari.institute/ a group dedicated to the postmodern analysis of commercial graphic design. CARI has sparked a post-Internet reappraisal of American visual culture, especially the recent fixation on the ’90s and Y2K.

After college I worked for about a year at Pittsburgh Print HousePittsburgh Print House Best shirt I printed at that shop (designer unknown) operating a mechanical screen press and embroidery machine and managing ink chemistry, quality assurance, and logistics.

Then I took a contract as a junior designer at AARP,AARP, Illustration in print magazine, 2023 working on graphics and illustrations for their print magazine and loads of photocomposite work for web articles. While there, I helped build an internal brand deck for their “Members Only” subscription tier.

In 2024 I was brought on at Bungie Studios,Bungie Studios, Social media gfx for Marathon, 2026 working with their localization team on video thumbnails and other collateral for Destiny 2 and Marathon. Most of my work there is typographic, setting localized strings across 13 languages.

In 2025 I joined Warren James,Warren James, warrenjames.org/ working on graphics development and print prep for various client projects with a focus on board games and brand identity.

My personal workMy personal work Untitled I (Fruitscape), 2021 is largely inspired by friction. I am fascinated by the misuse and bending of tools, especially software, and by the fusion of digitaldigital Repent, Pencilman, 2024 and hand processes.hand processes. Fluidity (screen print on acetate), 2022 I believe art is the result of human-made choices. With this in mind I am often making things by attempting to retain as much decision-making from the computer as possible; drawing shadows and highlightsshadows and highlights Last House on Mars, 2025 manually, eyeballing perspective, eyeballing perspective, Break Time, 2024 otherwise injecting some folk imperfection into digital work. I draw a lot of influence from the early days of computer art, early days of computer art, ALICE.GIF (artist unknown, ca. 1993) when the arts-and-crafts philosophy strove to push the boundaries of a digital workflow rather than subside to convenience. Wonkiness attributable to a human touchhuman touch Membrane Visitor, 2025 is the opposite of embarrassing.

The last few years I’ve gotten into photographyphotography Wilkinsburg, PA, July 2026as well. I don’t have a lot to say about my philosophy there, besides that it’s fun.

These days a lot of my personal work takes the form of one-off websites.one-off websites. HTML is a very bendable tool, and very fun to scratch around with. This page, for example, is pure HTML and coded by hand—no CDNs, no Claude, no cookies.
